What do the Reiki precepts mean to you?
I have spoken about the Reiki precepts before. They were taught by our founder Mikao Usui to support his students on their spiritual path of self-healing. Think of them as the foundation of the system of Reiki.
They are simple enough to recite first thing in the morning, and last thing at night…
Do not anger
Do not worry
Be humble
Be honest in your work
Be compassionate to yourself and others
… but I don’t believe that is the point. I believe Mikao Usui intended his students to live and breathe these precepts. Ensuring at every moment they were carefully considered and the values upheld. Anyone can recite words and then go about their day.
I would be a lair if I said that I can go through a day with no anger, and I would be monumentally lying if I said that I do not worry. But I am going to sit with each precept individually. I am going to ask myself, what made me worry in that way today? Was it an event? A person? Could my reaction have been different? If my reaction were different, what do I think the outcome would be? Will worrying help me? Is my worry fact? What is the reality of what could happen here?
You might be thinking this is all very well in hindsight, but I believe it is important to sit with these emotions. To look deeper in the hope of gaining an understanding into my reactions and actions. To look at my worries and process them. There is no dark without light. We are spiritual beings have very real human experiences, and we need to be less afraid of looking into our shadows, and asking the right questions, and seeking answers. Because that is where we learn, and that is how we grow. The healing starts when we strip the feelings and emotions right back to their very core. Because we can all stick a plaster on a wound, but the trauma will remain until you go to the root.
