Price of perfection

There is no perfection, only beautiful versions of brokenness.

- Shannon L. Alder

“I want it to be perfect.” Have you ever found yourself saying those words?

Have you ever said “I know. Nothing is perfect.” While feeling an uncontrollable burn inside to rip something apart and start over until it is ‘perfect’.

The impossibility of living up to perfection would be so unthinkably exhausting that I almost want to stop typing and have a nap.

Have you ever really asked yourself what perfection actually looks like for you? The perfect Sunday? The perfect date? The perfect job? The perfect holiday? The perfect house? The perfect walk?

There are so many elements and entities that are completely out of our control. The weather - “What will make this a perfect day is glorious sunshine.” If you live in England like me, you may have to move that goalpost. People - “If everyone can just get on for one day.” You can’t control how other people are going to react. The only thing you can control is how you respond. Curveballs “I just need everything to go smoothly.” The train is delayed by leaves on the track. The delivery is delayed. The item is sold out. Someone is sick. There are multiple scenarios and situations that could cause a knock on effect that could alter the course of your plans. But what we are good at, not perfect. But good, is adapting. We pivot. We move.

We may strive for perfection, and berate ourselves with that inner voice that serves to tell us where we are going wrong, but the perfection in you, in me, in us, is our imperfections. Our uniqueness.

So when you are next striving for that perfect day, know in your heart that all the imperfections that rear, to tweek and bend your plans create the uniqueness meant for you.
