Do you allow yourself flexibility?
I have been reading a lot lately, about how we have unrealistic expectations of what we should be able to achieve. It seems that even when we are setting ourselves goals, we end up with a list that becomes so long, we suddenly find ourselves in need of another list, to decipher the most important goals from the arm and leg long list we had previously drawn up!
Are you exhausted just thinking about looking at your goal list? It seems flippant, but these goals and expectations are adding pressures and making us feel overwhelmed.
Don’t get me wrong, it is admirable to have long term goals, dreams and aspirations, that we should all be striving for, but we also need to go a little easy on ourselves. Be mindful of your time when you are setting yourself goals.
Be bold, but also allow yourself to be realistic, if you know you have a busy week at work, the kids are on holiday, and the dog needs more attention, because your partner is away, set yourself a goal of standing outside in the morning for 3 minutes, barefoot on the grass whilst you drink your coffee, and allow yourself to be happy with that.
Not only have you achieved a goal, but you have also found yourself a moment of peace and grounding.
Allowing flexibility with yourself is so uncommon. We find ourselves flexing instantly for others, but ourselves? Not so much.
You need to take the time to celebrate the small wins by allowing yourself to set small goals, creating space for a positive mindset and the resilience to strive for the bigger achievements when you have the capacity.
By placing these unrealistic goals that we tell ourselves we have to achieve we are essentially leading ourselves towards feelings of inadequacy.
When looking at your list of goals, make sure you find the balance you need between ambition and self-compassion.
Always be bold in your dreams, but always be compassionate to yourself, and know when just getting through the week is achievement enough.
